Neuropsychology Assessments

A neuropsychology assessment is a systematic evaluation designed to understand how an individual’s brain functioning impacts their behaviour, cognition, and emotions.

The PLE Health neuropsychology service is carried out by HCPC  registered Neuropsychologists who can offer comprehensive neuropsychological assessment for a range of presentations including those following stroke, traumatic brain injury and dementia. They also advice on and /or conduct  neurorehabilitation approaches that may be of benefit.

A neuropsychology assessment generally involves the following steps:

  • 1

    Initial Consultation

This step involves gathering detailed information about the individual's medical, psychological, and educational history. The neuropsychologist may ask questions about any symptoms, concerns, or significant life events.
  • 2

    Objective Setting:

The purpose of the assessment is clarified—whether it's to diagnose a condition, assess cognitive strengths and weaknesses, or evaluate progress after treatment or an injury.
  • 3

    Testing Phase:

During the assessment, the individual is asked to complete various standardised tasks and questionnaires that measure cognitive functions like:
    - Memory
    - Attention and concentration
    - Language abilities
    - Executive functions (e.g., planning, problem-solving)
    - Motor skills
    - Visual-spatial reasoning
    - Emotional and personality traits
  • 4

    Observation and Interaction:

The neuropsychologist also observes the individual's behaviour, effort, and interaction during the assessment to get a fuller picture.
  • 5

    Interpretation and Analysis:

The neuropsychologist reviews and compares the results against norms (benchmarks for the individual’s age, gender, and education level) to detect any patterns or abnormalities.
  • 6

    Feedback and Recommendations:

A detailed report is shared with findings, conclusions, and recommendations. These might include treatments, rehabilitation strategies, or accommodations to support the individual’s well-being and daily functioning.

The process is tailored to each person's needs, and its scope can vary—some assessments are brief and focused, while others are more comprehensive.
