What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain develops and regulates attention, impulse control, and activity levels. It is one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions in childhood, affecting around 5% of school-age children in the UK.
ADHD is not a result of poor parenting, a lack of effort, or a child ‘being naughty’. It is a recognised neurological difference with a strong genetic basis. With the right understanding and support, children with ADHD can thrive.
Common signs to look out for include difficulty sustaining attention on tasks or play, frequently losing belongings, appearing not to listen when spoken to directly, difficulty with organisation and time management, excessive fidgeting or restlessness, impulsive decision-making, and difficulty waiting or taking turns.
It is important to note that ADHD symptoms must be present across more than one setting (such as both at home and at school) and must cause meaningful impairment to daily functioning.
How is ADHD Assessed in Children?
An ADHD assessment for a child involves a comprehensive multi-informant evaluation. This means gathering information from multiple sources to build a complete picture of the child’s presentation across different contexts.
A thorough assessment typically includes a detailed clinical interview with parents or carers covering the child’s developmental history, early milestones, behaviour at home, and family history.
It also involves standardised behaviour rating scales completed by parents and teachers, observation of the child’s behaviour during the assessment session, and cognitive or neuropsychological testing where indicated, to understand the child’s cognitive profile and rule out or identify any coexisting learning difficulties.
Assessment may be carried out by a clinical psychologist, educational psychologist, paediatrician, or child psychiatrist. The assessment should always consider whether another condition might better explain the child’s difficulties, or whether ADHD is present alongside other conditions which is very common.
